A workshop to allow children aged 6-12 years old who speak French at home to discover immunology, chemistry and computer sciences while developing their practice of French!

Native Scientist

Workshops for children aged 6-12 years old to allow them to learn about immunology, chemistry and computer sciences while developing their practice of French!
Five confirmed and French-speaking researchers will mentor them for this first Native Scientist workshop in French in Dublin: Dr Benoît Bossavit (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Mathilde Raverdeau (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Maxime Gueriau (Trinity College Dublin), Prof. Tahar Kechadi (University College Dublin) and Prof. Marc Devocelle (Royal College of Surgeons Ireland).

Event organised in partnership by the Alliance Française Dublin and the Embassy of France in Ireland coordinated by Dr Marie-Victoire Guillot-Sestier (Native Scientist coordinator, Trinity College Dublin), as part of the French Festival at Science Week.

Scheduled workshops

  • Benoit Bossavit Ph.D., Computer Scientist at TCD, Activity proposed: Pupils will play in front of a depth camera to interact with a mini-game. They will be explained that training motor skills is really important in the development of the brain.
  • Mathilde Raverdeau Ph.D., Immunologist at TCD. Activity proposed: Pupils will be introduced to the role of the immune system and the importance of good hand hygiene. They will be able to visualise germs on their hands under a UV light before and after washing.
  • Maxime Gueriau Ph.D., Computer Scientist at TCD, Activity proposed: Pupils will play a mini-game using Dublin city centre road network as a maze. They will guide an intelligent taxi in the city to pick and drop passengers around the city. They will be explained the issues and the advantages associated to future on-demand mobility systems in cities.
  • Tahar Kechadi Ph.D. Mathematics at UCD, Activity proposed: TBA
  • Marc Devocelle Ph.D. Chemistry at RCSI, Activity proposed: Pupils will learn about the structure and synthesis of proteins through a card game, the use magnetic letters and online research tool.
