Exhibition by Aurélien Froment at the Project

Aurélien Froment: "CALLING THE ELEPHANT"

JPEG

Like the famed Index Card Man, a magician in a film conjures images into the air, telling a cyclical tale with images. The sequences being performed into the air have something of the quality of a child’s film - there’s a rabbit and a hat and a turtledove-duck - but one in which the innocently clear images belie the careful navigation of a filmic landscape. Set within the gallery the new film produced by Project Arts Centre is one of the characters in a solo exhibition by French artist, Aurélien Froment. Another character takes the form of a publication, in which Froment splices together professional image manipulators: from an iconographer to a jigsaw puzzle maker, they sustain an ongoing vaudevillian conversation. It is an exhibition where individual works might reveal something of each other, and subtle interventions into the space remind us of our individual positions in a world diffused with celluloid.

Aurélien Froment, a French artist who makes a diverse array of works including documentary, fiction, manuals and assembled ready-mades, has recently shown in the touring Zones Arides at Lieu unique, Nantes and Fondation d’entreprise Ricard, Paris, Mercury in Retrograde at de Appel, Amsterdam in 2006, Of Any Actual Person Living or Dead, with Ryan Gander, Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers in 2005 and continues to work and show with Store Gallery, London.
