France: the world’s 2nd largest exporter of cinema
As the 67th Cannes Film Festival opens its doors to the glitz and glamour of la Croisette, focus on the success of French cinema abroad.
An extensive study carried out by OpinionWay for UniFrance, the organisation responsible for promoting French cinema, highlights the success of French films and productions abroad.
A recent article in the Figaro emphasises the recent commercial success of The Artist, Intouchables and Taken 2 which took in over 889 million euros at international box-offices. Aside from the commercial aspect of things, the overall level of satisfaction among foreign audiences surpasses 75% with three out of four people stating that they enjoy French cinema, according to the OpinionWay study. Fans include Russians, Germans, Americans and the British. The popularity of French cinema has been confirmed by Isabelle Giordano, the Director of UniFrance: “We couldn’t have imagined the extent of the foreign recognition our films have received. Furthermore, and it is not a well-known fact, we are the second largest exporter of cinema in the world after the USA”.
