France "utterly condemns" North Korean nuclear test
Sixth North Korean nuclear test – Statement by M. Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs
Paris, 4 September 2017
As the French President has said, France “utterly condemns the new nuclear test carried out by North Korea” on 3 September. Through its nuclear and ballistic programme, conducted in violation of its international obligations, the North Korean regime is threatening regional and international security.
In the face of these unjustifiable and illegal acts, I call for a firm and united response by the international community to protect the non-proliferation system and the rule of law, as well as peace and international security.
I express my solidarity with France’s partners, particularly in Asia. Together with the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Japan, we have called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council today, with a view to swiftly adopting new sanctions against the North Korean regime.
France calls for very strict implementation of sanctions and for the adoption of additional European Union measures. It remains in close contact with its main partners.
