Beta is a new festival of art and technology critically engaging with the impact of emerging technologies on society.

As a highlight of this 2024 edition, the French Embassy and Institut Français are proud to present ’Noire’, the Cannes Award-Winning Immersive Experience directed by Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre-Alain Giraud, based on Tania de Montaigne’s essay (Simone Veil Prize 2015).
Through the powerful story of Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old Black girl who defied segregation in 1950s Alabama, this groundbreaking AR experience explores race, gender, and civil rights.

Noire is produced by Novaya in partnership with Centre Pompidou and won the first edition of the Immersive Competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Join us at Beta Festival, discover Noire and experience the power of storytelling through technology.

Based on Tania de Montaigne’s essay, Noire tells the true story of Claudette Colvin, who in 1955 took a stand, on a segregated bus in Montgomery. Claudette Colvin, a 15 year old black girl refused to give up her seat, Colvin faced threats from the bus driver and white passengers aboard.
No one had ever dared to do this before. And yet, no one will remember her name.
It was the beginning of a journey that would take Claudette Colvin from struggle to abandonment.
When, nine months later, Rosa Parks, a lighter-skinned seamstress, took the same stand as Claudette, everything changed. Soon supported by a young minister who had recently arrived in Montgomery, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks became a hero, the spark that launched the civil rights movement. History is in the making.
Claudette Colvin made it all possible, but she was the one who was forgotten. She still lives in the United States today. She is 85 years old.
