[26 Nov] The Arty Scientist: let’s shake up some stereotypes! [fr]
So you thought scientists were men with white messy hair and wearing lab coats ? Join Muriel Grenon in Galway on Sunday 26th November to shake up some stereotypes !
Workshop held in the School of Natural Sciences, NUI Galway on Sunday 26th November from 11am to 4 pm. Entrance free.
Muriel Grenon wants to bust the myth of the mad scientist, open the mind of children on how scientists look like and what type of science they can do! Using markers, chalks or crayons & with support of artists, children draw themselves as life-scale scientist of their choice. They will be inspired by discussion with scientists in the room and life-scale pictures representing existing NUI Galway scientists working in different contexts and different outfits.
I am a researcher in cellular and molecular genetics from the University Paris XI – Orsay, I am a specialist of cancer biology and of the study of fundamental mechanisms involved in the cellular cycle as an answer to the DNA damages.
I joined NUI Galway in 2004 where I worked in the “ Centre for Chromosome Biology” until 2012. Since then, I have been at the head of a scientific outreach programme, Cell EXPLORERS within the School of Natural Sciences.
The Cell EXPLORERS programme involves students and employees of NUI Galway to develop outreach and public engagement activities, for the general public and especially young people and their families. The Cell EXPLORERS team offers interactive activities promoting modern biology. Each year, the programme goes to visit children in their schools, in particular with the “Fantastic DNA” session. Cell EXPLORERS also organises workshops during science days and festivals, including the Galway Science & Technology Festival which takes place in November, each year.
When: The Arty Scientist will run on Sunday 26th November 2017 between 11 am and 4 pm, as part of Exhibition Day of the Galway Science and Technology Festival.
Where : School of Natural Sciences, NUI Galway
The project The Arty Scientist will be run in collaboration with Cell EXPLORERS, the NUI Galway Arts Office and the artist Marina Wild, with the support of the Galway Science & Technology Festival and the Embassy of France in Ireland.
