An Post unveils special ‘Year of the French’ Postmark [fr]

A new postmark celebrates the 225th anniversary of the ‘Year of the French’! It commemorates the landing of General Humbert’s French troops in County Mayo on August 22, 1798, in support of Wolfe Tone’s rebellion. The year 2023 marks an important moment in Franco-Irish friendship.

The postmark was applied to all standard letters processed through An Post’s automated sorting centres for a two-week period in July, particularly at the time of the ‘Bastille Day’, and will be applied again at the end of August. A festival organized in collaboration with the Embassy will be held from August 19 to 22 in Ballina to highlight the 200th anniversary of General Humbert’s death and the 225th anniversary of his landing in Killala Bay.

Take advantage of the summer to write to your loved ones! They may be lucky enough to receive a letter marking this Franco-Irish commemoration.
