Statement by the Embassy on the passing of John Hume
The French Embassy to Ireland would like to extend its deepest condolences after the sad passing of Mr. John Hume.
An extraordinary peacemaker, great leader and Statesman, as well as a true European, his action has been instrumental for the restoration of peace and the conclusion of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
He was made Officier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1999, France’s acknowledgement for his impressive achievements. Nobel Peace Laureate, he was a political giant and will remain a landmark in Irish history.
His legacy will live on. May he rest in peace.
